I have an extensive trauma history and trauma recovery, my mother was schizophrenic and my father was an addict so I have spent years undoing the damage they created in my life.
I write to the dissociated parts of my inner world, for example, when one grows up in a chronically unsafe environment our thinking becomes separated into different parts so we can function, we become many different parts rather than a cohesive thinking person. For more information on this read Dr. Richard Schwartz who popularized the Internal Family System method of therapy. This actually saved me, I have had dramatic results since beginning this therapy.
To get in touch with my inner parts who are exiled children and young versions of myself, also the stealth defenses and disassociation I experience, I write to them.
Dear Inner Children, Thank you for hanging in there during the tremendous pain you had to endure and keeping us alive, you did not deserve any of that bad treatment, you are safe now, if there is anything you want to share I am always listening.
Dear Defenses: you have done a splendid job in keeping me safe by isolating me from very harmful situations, I am truly thankful, we are safe now and if there is anything you want to share I am always listening.
I write everyday and much deeply buried information comes to light and I become free and unburden from the fears and entrapment of living in the past.
I also meditate on a regular basis, it is one way of grounding, I practice my art everyday and that is grounding. I go to therapy and speak to anyone who will listen about how important mental health is.
Do whatever you need to do to heal what is weighing heavy on your mind, you don’t deserve to be so troubled and afflicted. You deserve a wonderful happy life, find what you need to be a whole functioning person. You are so worth it.
To ground oneself in an effort to gain healthy mental health is very necessary. It’s not easy because we get caught up stuck in our heads, thinking too much.
Grounding helps us to calm down our minds so we can get clarity. Grounding facilitates that emotional release we need to heal ourselves.
We can’t heal ourselves from unsettled thinking through a cerebral process. It doesn’t work that way. Our unexpressed emotions and unexpressed truths will consume us until they are looked at and this is where grounding comes in.
Here are a few examples of grounding that worked for me:
- focusing on the breath gradually working up to about 2 minutes.
- paying attention to what you are thinking and write it down.
- coming back to the present moment, what are you doing at that moment.
- meditation, quiet time, reflection.
- do artwork, draw, paint, doodle, sew, knit, woodwork any kind of crafts.
- write, even if it is a word, or sentence, write what you hear, write from the heart.
- listen to music, any music that you like.
- take a walk, breath in deep, look at nature, go to the ocean.
- take a different action, redirect your actions.
- exercise, any exercise is better than none.
Grounding is an important part of getting in touch with your body where a lot of negativity, hidden memories, and confusion is stored.
Our mind needs grounding for clarity and our bodies need grounding to get rid of stored negativity, hidden memories and confusion that it holds.
By practicing grounding on a regular basis, even once a week reaps great benefit and help change your thinking by changing your emotional life for the better.
Sometimes the best form of communication is silence. It does not mean the absence of thought (which is impossible). Silence allows for enough detachment to see the chatter of the mind and the truth.
When we allow silence we become powerful because eternal truths are revealed. The old worn out untrue stories we tell ourselves are shown for what they are: Lies. Our intuition is present. Silence develops our mental and spiritual power.
Silence in interactions is a powerful tool to cool anger and show you can be trusted. Silence allows for any situation to burn itself out to it’s proper conclusion.
Silence is grounding and perfect. You can expect your mind to rebel and resist. By practicing silence the rebel and resistance goes away long enough for your intuition to emerge.
Try it. Sit quietly in the morning for 10 minutes and be in the moment. If your mind is racing, follow your breath. You will notice a change in yourself and your day. You will be peaceful and clear headed.
